Maria asks Michael if he's gotten any of her phone messages. Michael says he has and walks away without explaining why he hasn't returned her phone calls. Max thinks Michael is a bit harsh. Michael tells Max their agenda involves the four of them (Max,Michael, Isabel and Tess) and there's no time for distractions.
Liz tells Max calls have been coming into Congresswoman Whitaker's office. She asks if she should return the calls. Michael tells her they don't have time to deal with it now. Liz ignores Michael's rudeness and tells Max she'll talk to him later in Trig. class. Max tells Michael mean people suck.
Michael's history teacher tells him they're not even one month into the semester and he's already failing his class. Michael tells him World War II just doesn't do it for him. His teacher tells him war veterans are in town for a reunion and Michael must interview one of them and turn in a biographical account of his wartime experience by 5pm. Michael says old people creep him out. His teacher tells him to think of them as living history.
Michael's interview with Captain Hal Carver doesn't get off to a good start. Michael asks what World War II was like. Hal asks, 'What do you think ?' Michael moves on to his next question and asks how Roswell is different today than it was back then. Hal says he doesn't know - he hadn't returned since he left in 1947. Since neither wants to be there, Michael asks if Hal will give him a few good details and he'll just copy the rest out of a book. Hal frowns on Michael wanting to take the easy way out. He tells Michael that kids today are softer than soap. Michael notices a photograph of Hal and they find they have a common interest in airplanes. Michael asks Hal why he left in 1947. He asks Michael if he knows what happened in 1947. Michael says it was the year of the crash, 4 ft. tall aliens with silver suits and no hair. Hal tells him that's what the crackpots who wrote the books want people to believe. He tells Michael they were lied to. The aliens had black eyes - empty, vacant, ageless.
Hal tells Michael about how the truth about the crash was covered up and the public was told it was just a weather balloon. He was given strict orders not to talk to anyone about the things he knew, especially newspaper reporters. Hal felt the public deserved to know the truth. Michael imagines himself,Max,Isabel,Tess,Liz,Maria and Alex as the characters in Hal's story. Hal tells Michael he told a reporter everything he knew and gave her classified/confidential documents as evidence. The story was to appear in the newspaper the next morning. Hal found out the next day that the reporter had died in a supposed car wreck. He was forced to resign. Before leaving the base he went to the morgue to get photographic evidence. There were eight sacks and it looked like human fetuses. While taking snapshots with his camera, two glowing aliens appeared. He was afraid at first and hid from them before realizing that they hadn't come to harm him. They were there to save what was inside the sacks. Outside of the morgue officials were about to enter. Hal pulled a fire alarm to distract the men. They chased him and Hal dropped his camera while escaping. He tells Michael the base was on full alert and there was no way anything could have made in or out with such tight security. He says it was the only time he ever stuck his neck out to save anyone and it all went to hell. Hal had been shooting at beer bottles while telling his story. Hal is about to light a cigarette to smoke when Michael extends his hand toward the bottles and blows them to bits. Michael's causes a flame to come from his thumb like a lighter and offers it to Hal. Hal nearly chokes on the cigarette. Michael tells Hal he saved him. They hug.
Michael apologizes to Liz for being so abrasive earlier. He tells her they'll work out the Congresswoman Whitaker thing. Liz asks if Max put him up to being nice. Michael says 'no'.

Michael takes Maria to see the granolith. He explains it's the reason he hadn't returned her phone calls. She asks him what it is. He tells her he doesn't know, but eventually he hopes they will find out. Maria is surprised he's decided to include her. He tells her he now realizes he owes more to her, Liz, Alex, Valenti, and Hal than he can imagine. He thanks Maria for all of her help and support. He tells her there's another set of pods out there somewhere just like the ones that housed him, Max, Isabel and Tess.
